THE JOURNEY
My illustration Mangroves was originally created for The Marine Diaries as part of their Marine Ecosystem Diaries project, highlighting the importance of blue carbon ecosystems. With the kind permission of founder Rebecca Daniel, I later submitted the artwork to the Explorers Against Extinction Sketch for Survival competition to help raise funds for wildlife conservation.
I never imagined the journey that would follow.
Explorers Against Extinction was invited to exhibit at COP26 after securing one of the highly sought-after exhibition spaces in the Blue Zone. More than 7,000 NGOs and organisations from around the world had applied. From around 1,000 artworks entered into the Sketch for Survival competition, just 25 were chosen for the COP26 exhibition, and only five were selected for display in the exclusive Leaders' Lounge VIP area. My illustration was among them.
I discovered this on 31 October 2021, the opening day of COP26. As access to the Leaders' Lounge was highly restricted, very few photographs were available. Curious to see the exhibition, I searched Twitter and was astonished to find a photograph of Angela Merkel and Dr Nigel Clarke standing in front of my illustration. It was a surreal moment, reinforcing both the visibility of the artwork and the urgent importance of protecting mangrove ecosystems.
